1.  Education. I am planning to go back to school at age 50 to
become a nurse. It is a lifelong dream, and of course I am
excited but also afraid. Can I do this? My daughter has been
urging me to do this for years, and especially since she started
taking classes at IUS for criminal justice. She will graduate this
year and has absolutely excelled at everything she has been
involved in. She has received so many honors and has found a
whole new world since starting college. She has really pushed
me to do this, as have my friends and co-workers.

2.  Family.  We are blessed to have 4 children and 10
grandchildren between us. All beautiful and healthy. Now if my 2
sons age 30&21 would grow up life would be good!

3.  Flowers. If I have a soul mate it is without a doubt, my yard.
(sorry honey) I love to mow and weed my flowers and would
stay in my yard from dawn to dusk if life would allow. I am
constantly looking for new plants for my yard. Often I stop by the
roadside and dig up a wildflower to take home. I drive a truck
and my shovel is always in the bed! My friend Teena and I are
always on the lookout for new landscaping ideas.

4.  Gas. We have a cap on how much the phone company can
charge for service and how much electric companies can
charge, why not gas? It can be done. Why hasn't it? Ask
yourself this question.

5.  Books. I love to read and have been an avid reader since
grade school. I can still remember reading my 2 favorite books
sitting on the back porch of my childhood home listening to the
rain and becoming totally absorbed in Peppermint Prom, and
Don't Call Me Katie Rose. Like many other women my age, I
helped Nancy Drew solve a variety of cases.

6.  President. Always on my mind is the plight of our country. I
am not a fan of our current leader. It is my opinion that George
Bush stood on top of the cross to get re-elected. Countless lives
have been lost, and innocent people have had their lives forever
altered, because of this man. How did Bill Clinton get a bad rap,
when he left this country with a surplus of funds. Mr. Bush
comes along and in his first term manages to give this country
the highest deficit ever. Higher in fact than all the past presidents
combined!!!!! I will now stop ranting.

1.  God – In his time all things will happen.  He is great
and powerful. He sent his son to die for my sins.

2.  My Parents – I am so lucky to have them.  They have
taken care of me since birth and still do.  I had a major
surgery in April and they took care of me for two weeks.  In
the following weeks they have taken me for test and
helped me with financial needs.

3.  My health – I am 30 (31 in August) and I have had the
worst year for health.  I have been to the Cleveland Clinic
for treatment.  I know that in my older days I will look at
this a great trial when something bigger happens

4.  I’m still single – Why can’t I attract a good, Christian,
loving man?  Being single has some advantages. But
being single also has disadvantages.  The advantages
being I don’t have to share or ask to spend so much
money.  The disadvantages of single hood, no one to
share life and love with.

5.  Ovarian Cancer – My mother has ovarian cancer since
2003.  She has endured a lot.  But the public needs more
education on ovarian cancer.  I want everyone to know
ovarian cancer like people know breast cancer.  Did you
know:
•  Annual US Diagnoses: 20,000 (est. for 2008: 21,650)
•  Annual US Deaths: 15,000+
•  Ovarian Cancer is the deadliest of all gynecological
cancers
•   No age is spared
•   Approximately 174,236 women living in the United
States have or have a history of ovarian cancer
•   In 2008 the survival rate is only 46%
•   UofL and UK are doing screenings and developing
better understanding and treatment for Ovarian cancer
•  That a wonderful group called OAK (ovarian awareness
of KY) is a great source for education and support.

6.  My Friends – I have friends from OAK, church, college,
neighborhoods, etc.  But some friends mean what they
say.  You need help they will help you. Go to the doctor
with you; call you when you are sick, pray for you and your
family.  I am thankful for the strong friends I have.

1.  Son: My son Ryan
just returned from his
second duty in Iraq on
July 5th..  We had a
scare back in May when
his tank was hit by an
IED ( Internal Explosive
Device).  He is fine and
I am happy to have him
home.  He is my hero.
He will enroll in U of L
in the Spring and THANKS
to the army his college
is paid for.

2.  Daughter: My
daughter Casey
(Army Reserves) made us
grandparents for the
first time on April 17,
2008 to a beautiful baby
girl named Jayden.  We
just put Casey and
Jayden on a plane to
Korea July 11th for 2
yrs to spend with her
husband who is in the
military as well.  I
have asked her to send
me a picture every week
so I can see how she
grows.  I will miss
those two terribly.

3.  Sam Meyer's Formal
Wear:  I am the
Assistant Manager at the
Mall St. Matthews
location and I love to
help couples who are
planning their wedding
choose the colors for
their special day.
Please come see us.

4.  Health:  I am
constantly thinking
about my age, health and
how I need to get back
to the gym.  The hard
part is finding the time
to do it.  I love to
walk and I know I feel
better when I put my
mind to it.

5.  Life: If someone
would have come up to me
five years ago and said
I would have two of my
four children in the
military, a son sent to
Iraq twice a daughter
getting married and
having my first
grandchild, I would have
told them they were
crazy.  My life has been
a merry go round.  Life
seems to always change,
sometimes fast and
sometimes slow which is
what I would like to
have now.

6.  Friends:  I make a
special effort to make
time for two of my
friends every three to
six months so we can
catch up on each others
lives and families.  We
usually pick a place to
dine and laugh together.
 At one restaurant back
at Christmas I started a
fire at the table.  We
had a lit candle and I
forgot and tossed a
piece of tissue from us
opening presents.  We
were the amusement for
the other tables.  There
is always time for
people in my life.  I
also feel the more
people you meet the
better off you are.

1.  Leadership Opportunities for Young
Women-Is is so important to give our
young women possibilities to develop
their leadership by hands-on
opportunities.  As Coordinator of
Presentation Academy’s Leadership
Program, I try to be aware of, find and
offer as many possibilities in leadership
as I can to our students. I’m delighted
as I see our young women grow into
very confident leaders.

2.  Louisville-I love Louisville with its
growing multi-ethnic population, with
its outstanding park system, with the
beauty provided by the hard work of
Brightside, and with the generous and
friendly people.  What a richness!

3.  Fun, unique earrings-I always look
for earrings I can wear without
piercings and discomfort.  Some I have
found are called “Hookers” (They hook
into the ear.) They are beautiful, get
lots of attention and are so easy to wear.

4.  The Environment-I love the outside,
the fresh air, green fields, trees,
flowers, fruits and produce.  I want to
do whatever I can to preserve it so we
can enjoy it now and be sure it is there
for future generations.

5.  The Global World-We, as world
citizens, have so much to share with
one another…different backgrounds,
different cultures, different outlooks.  I
hope we can have “coopetition” rather
than competition.  We and Mother
Earth need us to care about each other
and share.

6.  Friends and Family-These are the
special people in our lives surround us
with care, support, love, sharing, being
there…through the fun times and the
difficult times.

1.  Writing:
I have always loved to write, even as a child.  Children’s stories are my favorite.  I want to pursue it more.  Would love to write a column for
your magazine also.  Probably called “Bits and Pieces of Life”.  I have never published anything but I will!

2.  Losing Weight
I can’t taste or smell anything from a car accident injury, yet I eat too much.  I cook and love to bake.  I live alone so guess who eats it?
Alas I have clothes from sizes 8 to 22 -  and am at the 22 end  - yuk.

3.  Addressing Women Who want to Run Away From Home?
Don’t do it!!  I did – 24 year ago.  After 23 years of a bad marriage, 3 kids and 3 jobs, I had enough.  I left on a summer night at 4 am from
Chicago  – headed south and ended up in Clarksville, Indiana.  I thought I was in Tennessee.  I had driven all day.  Exhausted physically
and mentally, I stayed there.  People will do anything to become a Hoosier.  I am sure many women have thought of running away – really
running away. You don’t see many articles on this subject – I believe I could write a few? If I had it to do over I would get more income
from my x like his retirement and profit sharing.  All I could think of was flight.  You see at this point of my life it was fight or flight.  At 42
years old my fight was used up.

4.  Retirement
I have tried this at 62 years old.  It was boring plus I could not live on my small Social Security check.  So I work full time for an internet
company as a Customer Service Rep. I have met many wonderful people in this job.  Will I ever get back to writing?  Will I ever retire?
Writing is my joy, my piece.  I will retire, but never stop growing and writing – even if it is for myself only.

5.  Gas Prices and Bills
Both never ending and always an issue on everyone’s mind. I refuse to pay these prices for gas so I travel only when necessary and am
so glad I live 2 miles from work.  We are being tread upon by our government but no one tells us what to do.  Stop driving ladies!  If you
can.?

6.  Old Age.  My Total Fear.
Mother is 94 and has dementia.  27 more years and I will be 94 if I make it.  I figure if I am blessed as she is (and ornery) as she is, I will
have one saving grace, even if I too acquire dementia,  no one will know the difference!!  I want to live the years happy, blessed and
writing.

1.  Cancer Awareness: Diagnosed with ovarian
cancer in November, my mother had surgery,
chemotherapy, and is now cancer free! The
past 8 months has been a roller coaster. I
have learned  you are your own best
advocate. I recently took part in Relay for Life,
raising money, walking, sending e-mails and
notes, and making calls, and I will participate in
the Susan B. Komen Breast Awareness walk in
the fall. Wear those ribbons proudly. I wear
teal ribbons, and am asked which cancer it
symbolizes. We have to talk about it! Cancer
isn’t going away! Awareness is the key!

2.  Youth Count: Youth Count is a community-
wide initiative for Floyd County in Southern
Indiana.  The focus is to engage youth and
adults in relationships that create a community
where youth are valued, investments are
made in their well-being, and all youth have
the opportunity to succeed.  Support,
encourage and mentor our young people; they
need us – and we need them. We all benefit
when we help make our youth stronger and
provide them with the experiences and
attitudes that help them make sound
decisions.  www.youthcount.com

3.  Project AHEAD®:  I am the coordinator of
Project AHEAD®, an elementary enrichment
program offered through IU Southeast
Noncredit Programs, entering its’ 26th year. I
am so excited to be able to offer top-notch
classes with top-notch instructors to
Kentuckiana students.

4.  Children:  I am the proud mom of two sons;
Luke, 25, and Jeremy, 21. My goal is to
continue to offer my support and
encouragement as they grow and mature, and
find their own way as adults. As a parent you
never quit worrying. The worries just change!

5.  Support System:   I am so thankful for my
support system of parents, sons, friends, and
co-workers. Recently divorced after 25 years
of marriage, I have a lot of new challenges.  I
fiercely want to be independent, but feel very
lost at times. As I have had to adjust to single
life and ask for help, I have learned to lean on
friends. It has also made me want to be a
better friend, daughter, and mother.

6.  Gas prices:  Isn’t that on everyone’s mind! I
hear people talk about it at the store, church,
work, everywhere! I know it has made havoc of
my own budget, and to that of others in the
community.

1. Bad things. My mother (Eileen
Gleason Myers) passed on
February 11, after suffering a
sudden (and massive) brain
aneurysm that completely
destroyed the frontal lob of her
brain. She was 79, beautiful inside
and out, and she was truly my
rock through good times and bad.
Thanks to the Vonage, I called her
daily and our chats were truly the
highlight of many of my days. I'm
glad I told her often how much I
loved her and how much her
friendship and support meant to
me. Never miss an opportunity to
tell those you love how you feel -
it might be your last chance.

2. Good things. Life goes on. My
dad (Mel Myers) had a triple
bypass, and aortic valve
replacement in 2006 (at age 85),
followed by two extremely
serious bouts of pneumonia.  Mom
had devoted herself to taking
excellent care of him during his
recuperations. I believe the best
way he can honor her memory is
to live as long, and as well as he
can; that was her goal. He's 87,
living alone, and golfs, hunts,
plays bridge, enjoys his family
immensely, and HE is now the
recipient of my daily phone calls,
plus many visits from my sister,
brother, and me. He and mom had
a romance that spanned nearly 60
years - that makes me happy, and
proud. By the way, I tell him
every day that I love him.

3. Working. I program noncredit
enrichment-type classes for the
general public for Indiana
University Southeast. It's hard
trying to get classes going during
these tough economic times, yet
we have so much to offer! I
struggle to find classes that will
be enriching, at a price that makes
my students happy, and allows us
to keep the ball rolling. By the
way, if you have a skill you'd like
to share, or a class idea, email me
at lhaskins@ius.edu. I'd love to
hear from you!

4. Election 2008. I believe the
upcoming election may be the
most crucial in my lifetime. My
husband Steve and I are trying to
be better informed on the issues
with the goal of following our
own hearts/minds and ignoring
the pollsters, pundits, and other
talking heads.

5. My family. My husband got a
package deal when we married
nearly 19 years ago. He has the
patience of job and a loving,
sensitive nature. My children,
Brad and Marjie, are 29 and 26,
yet I still want to protect them
from the big bad world. Time to
cut the apron strings - they're
doing pretty darn well in spite of
me holding on. I'm impressed with
the fact that they've both faced
unique and difficult challenges -
but "they're gonna make it after
all."  To family! Hey, have I told
all of you today that I love you?

6. Creativity. I really want to do
something creative with rubber
stamping, scrapbooking,
papercrafting, and the like. I'm
utterly amazed by the talent that I
see on the blogs I read. So far, I've
been a gatherer, more than a
doer. I want to have the
confidence to USE the materials
and tools I've gathered, and not
let my perfectionistic streak keep
me from trying. I see many pieces
of art that are charmingly
imperfect, yet I have trouble
allowing myself to create the
same. My goal: Embrace
imperfection!
