Tephra
by Tina Mackin

Black smoke and ashes
bubbled up from my feet,
poured from my mouth.

It was a quick fire.
I swallowed the next flow,
choking on sulfur.

Flames filled my eyes,
burning my cheeks
God help me.

I couldn’t deny
the debris laying between us.
It ignited.

I turned coward,
loving the violent spew
that struck my back and smoldered.

Glowing in the wrath,
I opened my mouth
exhaling only air.
