Makeover Your Weight- MILESTONE WELLNESS CENTER
For years Brenda Lewis tried one weight-loss program after another, and every time
ended up with the same results. She always felt hungry and the weight always returned.

In the fall of 2006 after stepping off the scale at her doctor’s office, Brenda decided it
was time to make a change. She noticed that her co-workers at Baptist Hospital East
had been sharing positive stories about the Baptist East/Milestone Wellness Center,
and after watching them shed their excess pounds, she decided “it was time that I do
something about it.”

Brenda soon joined the Health Management Resources at Baptist East/Milestone
Wellness Center, where the goal was to lose weight while making long-term healthy
lifestyle changes.  HMR program director and health educator Monica Randelia says
the initial 13-week phase of the program includes delicious Healthy Solutions shakes
and entrees combined with unlimited fruits and vegetables.

Once Brenda completed the initial 13 week phase, she transitioned into the
maintenance phase where lean proteins and whole grains were incorporated back
into her diet while she lost weight. Physical activity was also a key component to the
program.

“The thing I really liked about the program was that I wasn’t hungry, and it was a very
satisfying diet,” Brenda says. She admits that she loved having the chocolate shakes
throughout the day because they helped to satisfy her sweet tooth.

Throughout the process clients receive personal attention from HMR health educators.
Brenda recorded her meals and snacks, and Monica was there to help every step of the
way.  “The health educators were not confrontational, instead they were really
supportive throughout,” says Brenda, who is now enjoying her 60s. Working with
Monica empowered Brenda to stick with the program. Meeting new friends at the fitness
center also helped to keep her on track. Brenda lost 41 pounds with the HMR program,
but also made permanent changes to her lifestyle and eating habits.

Brenda says she is still amazed how the weight continues to stay off. Sometimes, when
the temptation arises to have an unhealthy snack, Brenda curbs the urge with one of the
Healthy Solutions meals. Her favorite is the lasagna entree (only 250 calories!).

Though Brenda definitely loves her new look, she is most pleased with her lowered
cholesterol. With new energy she often visits the zoo, or hikes in the local forests. “It’s
really not a diet anymore. It’s more like choosing healthy, and if you follow the program
and eat the right foods, you don’t get hungry.” Brenda continues to exercise at the
Baptist East Milestone Fitness Center, and walks daily with friends.

Makeover Your Figure- UNIVERSITY SURGICAL ASSOCIATES- DR TERRY MCCURRY
Like many moms, Jessica Marsh, 31, does a lot for her kids. She is a devoted mother to Lexy, 9, and Luke, 3,
and owns her own company.

Finding time to do something for herself was difficult, but last fall, she did. She had breast augmentation
surgery. “I decided to have it to feel good about myself in tank tops and bathing suits after having kids,” the
Floyd Knobs resident said.

She is not the only one seeking this type of surgery after having kids. “Most of my augmentation patients are
in their thirties,” said Dr. Terry McCurry, Marsh’s plastic surgeon. “They’ve finished having children and want
to do something nice for themselves.”

Dr. McCurry, who is part of the team of surgeons with University Surgical Associates (USA) Plastic Surgery,
explained that sometimes the hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy reduce the size of the breasts
from what they once were. For other women, sometimes their breasts never really developed in good proportion to the rest of the
body. “Most of our breast augmentation patients seek this surgery to improve their self-confidence,” he said.

Marsh is very happy with her results. “I am ready for summer. They look very natural. Dr. McCurry did a great job,” she said. “I had such
a wonderful experience with him. He is very personable, down to earth and trustworthy. I felt his primary concern was to make me
happy.”

For Dr. McCurry, this level of service is the standard for his practice. His patients’ needs always come first. While he performs a wide
variety of plastic surgery procedures, breast augmentation is among the most common.

He brings a unique perspective to his cosmetic surgery practice at USA because not only is he a board-certified plastic surgeon, he
also is a faculty member in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Louisville. As an academic surgeon, he stays at the
forefront of plastic surgery techniques. “Our patients benefit from the advances we achieve in our research,” McCurry said. “Thus our
patients are afforded the latest, most innovative treatments available.”

For Marsh, this means getting the results she envisioned. “I would do it all over again,” she said. “I feel so good about my body.”

“Jessica was a great patient because she has a great attitude. It is very important to listen to your patients’ expectations and ensure
that what you can deliver matches what they are looking for,” Dr. McCurry said. “Jessica has done very well since her surgery and has
returned to all the activities she enjoyed before – with a little more self-confidence.”

Makeover Your Jewelry- MOORE JEWELRY

At the age of ten Karen McCoy inherited her mother’s wedding band but was unsure about what to
do with the small platinum ring. At first she stored it inside her jewelry box but occasionally would
wear the ring on a necklace.

This year, however, Karen began to consider wearing the ring, just as her mother did before the
tragic accident that took her life in 1961, and thought about different ways to revitalize the 66-year-
old piece. “I wanted the ring done around the anniversary (of her mother’s death), but I would
always get sentimental. I don’t know what prompted me to do it this year,” Karen says.

At first Karen wanted to add each of her four siblings’ birthstones to the band.  After several months
of discussing plans with her husband she took the wedding band to John Moore of Moore Jewelry.
With John’s expertise in estate jewelry and jewelry design, he advised that the tiny band could not
accommodate the five birthstone colors in any aesthetically pleasing way. The ring would forever
look stuck together as an afterthought, instead of designed to commemorate something special.

Together Karen and John designed the band to accommodate an Imperial topaz, her mother’s
birthstone, and a Spessartite garnet, representing her dad. “It’s not about us kids — it’s about my
parents and their lives together. It was their marriage to each other,” Karen says.
John’s brother, Tim Moore, created a ring that was beautiful, yet simple, just as Karen says her
mother was — a woman who cared for five children and served her church faithfully.

Tim’s meticulous care kept the ring’s original inscription “CPM to MIM 7•6•42,” intact, honoring her
parents’ marriage the lifelong commitment of Charlie Paul McCoy to Martha Isabelle Meredith.
“John is very creative. He takes great care and he values the sentimental as well as the monetary
value of jewelry pieces,” Karen says.

When Karen first saw the ring she immediately put it on and admits that driving afterwards proved a
challenge because she couldn’t stop admiring the resurrected ring. For Karen’s ring, John and Tim
maintained the integrity of the original piece, but there are occasions when customers prefer to
have jewelry completely transformed into something different while maintaining characteristics of
the original.

Prior to Karen taking her mother’s ring to Moore Jewelry, her mother-in-law, Barbara Merrick,
wanted to share her tri-colored gold necklace with Karen, but the length was too long for her.
Barbara had Moore Jewelry remove a section of the necklace for Karen to wear as a bracelet.

Thanks to Moore Jewelry Karen will forever remember Barbara Merrick, and Charlie Paul McCoy
and Martha Isabelle Meredith.

Makeover Your Face- DR JULENE SAMUELS

Debbie Miles, 56, once didn’t think highly of cosmetic surgery, and as a confident woman the idea to have
any work done never entered her mind.

This changed when a friend visited Dr. Julene B. Samuels, M.D. for a full face lift, including the eyelids and
neck. Even though the procedure seemed major, Debbie says that when she saw her friend, “She looked
radiant without changing her natural features. It was almost like someone had just turned back the hands
of time and she was the person she had always been, but with less aging,” Debbie recalled.

Several years later, Debbie woke up one day and found her self looking in the mirror, and wondering what
had happened to the woman she once knew. She noticed loose skin on her neck, and “face” in places it
didn’t belong. “I never thought of myself as vain, and I still don’t think of myself as vain,” Debbie says. Initially
she felt guilty for even considering cosmetic surgery, but quickly realized a facelift was something she had to
do for herself. Remembering the excellent results her friend had received, Debbie gave Dr. Samuels a call.

Debbie says her first visit to Dr. Samuels’ office felt more like visiting with old friends — she even chatted with them over
pictures of her first grandbaby. “Her staff was fantastic. I felt like I knew all of them my whole life after just being there for five
minutes,” Debbie says, and can’t stress enough how sincere the team was in helping her.

At first Debbie only wanted to tighten her neck, but Dr. Samuels suggested a lower facelift as well to achieve the intended goal.
When Debbie asked about lifting the skin around her eyes, however, Dr. Samuels did not feel it was necessary. “Dr. Samuels
said she wouldn’t do anything I did not need, and that made me feel very good about her,” Debbie says.

When Debbie woke up after the procedure in the luxurious Trager Pavilion at Jewish Hospital, she looked in the mirror
awestruck. “I just stared at myself and I was just thrilled. Absolutely, positively thrilled,” she says. That day Debbie happily
tossed her self-consciousness out the window.

While she did have some swelling, bruising was minimal and she returned to work in two weeks. Today Debbie often shares
her experience with her friends. “If they are thinking about having a procedure, it must already be very important to them, and if
it is important they should speak to a professional,” Debbie says.

For the future, Debbie is considering a laser skin peel and laser treatment for varicose veins.

Makeover Your Smile- LOUISVILLE SMILE CENTER- DR STEVE SCHMITT

Just a year ago, 16-year-old Jayde Bishop rarely smiled when her picture was being taken. “Now I
always smile in pictures and I don’t avoid the camera,” Jayde announces proudly with the
completion of her Invisalign® treatment from Dr. Steven T. Schmitt.

Dr. Schmitt offers others services as well. "From a procedure as simple as Zoom Whitening to
ceramic crowns and veneers, my team and I have the ability to create that amazing smile that
patients strive for, a smile they can be proud of!"

Jayde’s new smile has even led to some modeling opportunities. The best part about Invisalign®,
Jayde says, is that not one of her classmates noticed she was wearing the aligners. If she did talk
about it, Jayde says, she simply told them “I have invisible braces on.”

“She is really a responsible child, and with everyone in high school coming out of braces, I didn’t
want her to feel insecure wearing them,” says Jayde’s mother Tonya, who decided to wear
Invisalign® at the same time.

As a cosmetologist at JR Spa and Salon, a neglected smile was not acceptable for Tonya. “If I’m not
looking good, how are my clients going to trust me to make them look good?” Tonya says. She’s still
thankful to one of her clients, who told her about Dr. Schmitt.

Tonya, 35, credits Jayde for always checking on her progress while wearing the clear aligners,
which can be removed for brushing and eating. “From the ages of 7-18, I always had something
going on with my mouth as far as braces or a retainer,” she says.

Tonya wore a metal retainer until she was 32, when it was lost. No longer wearing the retainer, her
teeth shifted and began crowding her mouth. For her, Invisalign was the perfect solution. She is still
amazed at how Invisalign® straightened her teeth, solving the dental woes she had long endured.

For patients who don’t want to wear traditional braces, Dr. Schmitt offers an Invisalign consultation.
He prepares patients for treatment by taking impressions and digital images of their teeth, and with
3-D computer imaging technology, a customized treatment plan is created, and the clear plastic
aligners made.

Even though the office visits were only ten minutes long, Tonya says Dr. Schmitt treated her and her
daughter more like friends than patients. “I have probably been more comfortable with him more
than anyone I have ever dealt with,” Tonya says, who now takes her entire family to Dr. Schmitt for
routine dental work.

Dr. Schmitt is known throughout Kentuckiana as a leading cosmetic dentist and is a member of the
American Dental Association and the Aesthetic Dental Society of Louisville. "I have lived in Louisville
my entire life and have been providing optimal dental care to my patients for 23 years. I am proud to
say I am able to change someone's life by giving them a beautiful smile they can be proud of," says
Dr. Schmitt.

Makeover Your Legs- ULTIMATE VEIN CARE

Clarksville resident Laura Sparks loved planting palm trees, hibiscus flowers, lilies and other lush tropical
flowers in her garden, until recently when her legs began causing her pain. When Laura gardened she had to
endure throbbing pain and fatigue for several days because of the varicose veins in her legs. Working in her RN
position was the only thing she could really do.

“My legs would just hurt badly enough that I’d be up in the middle of the night with calf pain.  It just made it where I
couldn’t do a lot of activities that I used to do when I was younger,” Laura says.

Now, thanks to Dr. Elizabeth S. Rachel, MD of Ultimate Vein Care, Laura, 47, says her legs now feel like that of a
20-year-old, and this spring she moved six truckloads of plants and laid 300 bags of mulch.

In just two short office visits followed by the Endovenous Laser Ablation, Laura found her legs free of the veins
that had caused her so many problems. “We do the procedure in the comfort of our office, so there is minimal
time spent here, unlike hours on end at the hospital,” says Denise Searcy, office manager for Ultimate Vein
Care.

When Laura went to Ultimate Vein Care, a division of Surgical Care Associates, she had the assurance of Board
Certified Vascular Surgeons with over 55 years of combined experience in caring for varicose veins.“I didn’t want
do the procedure until I found that right person, and I have no regrets,” Laura says.

Part of Laura’s hesitation was fear — she worried about her circulation, and missing work. With the experienced
team at Ultimate Vein Care her fears were put to rest. The same day of treatment she even attended her son’s
football game, and went to work the next day. Unexpected, and of course welcome, Laura is thrilled with her legs
that now are free of the pesky veins.

“My children used to beg me not to wear shorts, and now they don’t say anything,” Laura says.  This spring, Laura
treated herself to a much desired sundress and sandals to match. Laura says the procedure exceeded her
expectations. “It’s something I never thought my legs would look like.”
“I just have all the confidence and faith in Dr. Rachel and the team. I wish this was available years ago and I
definitely would not have hesitated to have it done,” Laura says.

Today she is extremely thankful she can walk, garden, and swim without pain.

Makeover Your Shape- BODY ALLURE

Dr. Michael Samuel and Dr. Steve Samuel of Body Allure have used Lipodissolve® to
treat more than 1,300 patients to help them get rid of small and medium areas of
body fat––under the chin, abdomen, legs, under the upper arms, and the bra line.
Their practice is the largest provider of Lipodissolve® treatments in the Kentuckiana
area, with patients coming from as far away as Chicago and Tampa.

Lipodissolve® is a nonsurgical medical treatment that reduces fat deposits,
especially localized deposits that are often inherited and typically do not respond to
dieting or exercise. This treatment can improve skin tone, elasticity of the skin, and
natural collagen production, all with minimal discomfort and little recovery time.

“We have had great results with Lipodissolve,” says Dr. Michael Samuel. “Our
patients have a high rate of satisfaction with the treatment and many of our patients
return for other areas to be treated.”

One of those patients was Kathryn Hartzell of Jeffersonville, who had been exercising
and dieting for years, but was unable to get rid of pockets of fat. Her daughter was
getting married and Hartzell didn’t want to look like the mother of the bride, so she
went to Body Allure for Lipodissolve® treatments.

“With Lipodissolve, my whole body changed,” Kathryn says. “I had treatments for my
upper and lower abdomen, sides of my waist, inner and outer thighs, and under my
arms. I went from a size 12 to a size 4 or 6. I am thrilled that I did it. I feel young and
now wear a bikini. Once you start to improve your body, it is encouraging.”

Kathryn liked the caring, friendly doctors and staff at Body Allure, but she also
appreciated the fact that she felt no pain during the treatments. About an hour before
a treatment, she would apply numbing cream to the area to be treated. After the
treatment, she would have some swelling for a day or so and very little discomfort.

Tammy Kelly of Louisville lost 46 pounds several years ago, but had areas of her
body that exercise would not fix. As a birthday gift to herself, she had Lipodissolve®
treatments at Body Allure that changed the look of her body and motivated her to
continue to exercise and keep her weight under control.

“My husband noticed that I don’t have love handles, and people tell me that I look
better,” Tammy says. “It’s easy to zip my slacks, nothing hangs over my waist, and my
thighs don’t rub together. It is so exciting!”

Makeover Your Hair- ADVANCED DERMATOLOGY

“Dr. William Parsley is an artist of the head,” says Don Russell, who underwent hair restoration surgery
at Advanced Dermatology and Dermaesthetics. “His work is exceptional.”

Surgical hair restoration is an operation that takes hair from the back of the head and moves it to the
area of hair loss. Dr. Parsley performs procedures on both men and women. The fringe, or back and
sides, of hair on a balding scalp is known as donor dominant hair, which is the hair that will continue to
grow throughout the life of most men and women.

Don, a sportscaster and owner of Don Russell Productions in Louisville, had worn a hairpiece since he
only had hair on the sides and back of his head, when finally he decided to have the surgery. “
I had an excessive amount of hair loss,” Don says, who had four surgical sessions to receive the
coverage he wanted. “I kid Dr. Parsley and tell him that I was the biggest reconstruction project since
Sherman went through Atlanta.”

Dr. Parsley is board-certified in dermatology, Hair Restoration surgery, and dermatopathology. His
practice is limited to hair restoration surgery. Consultations are free. Advanced Dermatology and
Dermaesthetics was one of the earliest clinics in the world to adopt the new technology of
microscopically prepared follicular unit grafts, considered the most natural of all the current technology.
All grafts used in Dr. Parsley’s procedures are prepared using stereomicroscopes.

“Hair plugs are not used any more,” Dr. Parsley says. “Hairs in the front of the scalp are different from
those in the back, so we take a strip of scalp from the hair at the back of the head. Then under the
microscope, we take out the follicular units of 1–4 hairs and place them in a holding solution. Using fine
needles, we insert the units into the scalp.”

The patient is given a local anesthetic and spends time during the procedure watching a movie. Though
the procedure is tedious the patient feels no pain, and must take it easy for a week after the surgery.
“The hair shaft falls out at 2–4 weeks,” said Dr. Parsley, who is the incoming president of the
International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. “Hair is like a flower that dies back, but the bulb
continues to live. Then it begins growing at four months.”

For more information about hair restoration surgery and what  Advanced Dermatology and
Dermaesthetics can do for you visit www.hairsurgery.com.

“It’s amazing because my hair is so healthy, and it makes me feel good,” explained Russell. “Now I can

Makeover Your Skin- IAAM

Being an account executive at Today’s Woman, Today’s Family, and Today’s Transitions
publications keeps Helen Ratterman extremely busy. Like so many of us, she doesn’t have time for
treatments with down-time, and she doesn’t have time for feeling tired or being ill.
“I discovered IAAM Wellness and their Skin Therapy Center when I met with the medical
director, Dr. Peggy Fishman, regarding Today’s Woman magazine. This turned out to be a very
positive event for both my well-being and my appearance,” Helen says.

She found that IAAM Wellness was a comprehensive age-management and preventive medicine
center. “The evaluation was quite extensive, with in-depth laboratory analysis, physical evaluation,
and a two hour consultation with Dr. Fishman. I was then placed on a wellness program to optimize
my health. I like the convenience of taking customized nutrient packets, and I like knowing my
nutrients are pharmaceutical-grade and are exactly what I need.”

Since becoming a patient at IAAM, Helen says “I have lost 25 pounds, no longer have high blood
pressure, and many unwanted symptoms have disappeared. Dr. Fishman only prescribes Bio-
Identical Hormones. And her Skin Therapy Center has been wonderful for the rejuvenation of my
skin. So now, I feel and look younger!”

Helen was especially impressed with the innovative Syneron™  body treatments, which use a
combination of  infra-red and intense pulsed light. Syneron™ technology can be used for skin
tightening, skin rejuvenation, acne treatment, hair removal, and cellulite reduction. “The treatments
are virtually pain-free and I can go right back to work, which is especially
important to me since I meet with the public daily,” Helen says with enthusiasm.

Dr. Fishman and her friendly, caring staff also provide complete skin analysis, with treatments and
remarkable skin care products for rosacea, acne, sensitive skin, and aging skin. They also offer
makeovers and make-up instruction using Jane Iredale makeup, Botox injections (with a gentle
hand), and dermal fillers.

Helen says she thinks everyone should “check out IAAM Wellness Center, since it offers both inner
health and outer beauty. Everyone knows that lasting beauty is dependent upon inner
wellness, and IAAM Wellness/Skin Therapy Center has you covered.”

Makeover Your Nose- DR MARTIN FOX

Monica Reichand always felt self-consciousness about her nose. “Basically it was the
contour I wasn’t happy with, and as a child I fell down and I think that caused the
irregularity,” says Monica, who moved from Louisville to Chicago to pursue her dental
career.

Since Monica could do little to hide her nose, it continued to make her unhappy. After years
of
unhappiness she finally decided to visit Dr. Martin Fox to see how he could help. “Dr. Fox
has a good reputation in Louisville and my family knows him, so I felt comfortable going to
someone familiar,” she says.

After Monica’s first appointment with Dr. Fox he quickly eased the anxiety she felt, since this
was to be her first surgery. “When I met Dr. Fox, he explained everything from start to finish,
and made me more comfortable. Even the day of the surgery he was very professional and
explained everything again, calming my fears,” Monica says.

Soon after the outpatient procedure Monica anxiously showed her new nose to her family
and classmates at the UofL School of Dentistry. “My immediate friends knew and were
supportive. They came to see me and brought me flowers and my parents took care of me
afterwards,” Monica says.

Two weeks after the procedure Monica returned to class with a newfound self-assurance.
“I just felt a lot more confident afterward. It wasn’t necessarily like I didn’t have a lot of
confidence before, but I felt like my personality and confidence was definitely lifted,” Monica
beamed.  As an added bonus, Monica’s breathing improved after the procedure as well.

“There are certain breathing problems that can be corrected with rhinoplasty,” Dr. Fox
explains. With each patient Dr. Fox evaluates any possible breathing correction, taking the
time with every patient to determine their individual needs and expectations, resulting in a
personalized procedure every time.

“I try to do what the patient is asking me to do,” he says. Often patients will bring
photographs of desired noses and Dr. Fox will present computer imagery to illustrate the
outcome.

Monica says she highly recommends Dr. Fox to anyone considering cosmetic surgery. For
those who are hesitant she advises “If it’s something that you’re self-conscious about and
there is a way you can correct it, then go for it! It’s one of those things you have to decide for
yourself.” She says her only regret is that she didn’t have it done sooner.

Makeover With Surgery- CLARK MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

“I didn’t recognize you.” “I heard you used to be heavy.”

Getting used to such comments is just one of the things that has changed since Christi Norris
underwent life-changing weight loss surgery. Christi, a respiratory care manager at Clark Memorial
Hospital, had the Lap-Band procedure at Clark Memorial in December, 2006.

The Lap-Band system reduces the amount of food a person can eat by
placing an adjustable silicone band  around the upper portion of the stomach. This helps
produce a gradual, healthy rate of weight loss of about one to two pounds per week. Typically, Lap-
Band surgeries require a hospital stay of less than 24 hours.

Since her surgery Christi has lost 100 pounds and seven sizes. “I would do it again,” Christi says.
“I’ve not just changed my outward appearance, I’m more confident and I smile more often.”
She’s healthier as well. “I have two small children.  Now, taking them to the zoo is a joy instead of
an overwhelming chore.”Christi warns, however, that the surgery is not a quick fix. You have to be
ready to change your lifestyle. Christi has worked hard to integrate healthy eating and exercise into
a busy family life.

Christi appreciates the approach Clark Memorial Hospital offered, which helped her take those
first steps to a healthier lifestyle. Clark Memorial Hospital’s Bariatric Program, provided through
surgeons Drs. Daniel MacMillan and Brice Hamilton, offers:
• Weekly one-on-one counseling with
the Bariatric Coordinator
• Nutritionist sessions
• Exercise specialist sessions
• Support groups

The program even offers a clothes exchange as people lose weight. Since the program started at
Clark Memorial Hospital in 2006,  51 patients have lost 2,540 pounds. “Obesity is a serious health
issue. It takes a serious, comprehensive approach to solve the problem,” says Carolyn McKee,
RN, Bariatric Program coordinator. After the surgery, people often find health issues related to
obesity, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, are less severe or reverse themselves
altogether. “The lap band surgery is a tool,” Christi says. “It was the jump start I needed to get
through this weight loss journey.”

If you are serious about weight loss, make the commitment, set a realistic goal, and “go for it,”
advises Christi. “My goal was to lose 100 pounds. Set the goal that makes sense. It may not even
be a weight loss goal. It may not be a dress size. It may be that you want to get down on the floor
and play with your kids.”

For information about Clark Memorial Hospital’s comprehensive lap band program, call Carolyn
McKee, RN, at 812.283.2087 or visit www.clarkmemorial.org. You can also attend an information
seminar the second Thursday of each month in the Lower Level.

Makeover Your Mouth- REMMERS DENTAL

While in her late forties, Pat Williamson of Louisville decided to make a big change in her smile when
her teeth began shifting and the gap between her front teeth was widening. A friend
suggested that she visit Dr. Steve Remmers and his staff at the Remmers Dental Group for a free
consultation.

After consultation, treatment options were discussed and Dr. Remmers and Pat decided that “After 18
months of wearing braces my teeth were straight and the gap gone, but a tooth in the upper left part of
my mouth was smaller than the others,” said Williamson, who is studying for her master’s degree in
theology. “Dr. Remmers suggested a porcelain veneer to make that tooth and the
corresponding tooth on the upper right side uniform in size.”

Dr. Remmers took precise measurements of her mouth, trying various shapes and sizes of veneers
to find the one that would best fit Williamson’s needs. Then he made a mold for the veneers. Within a
week or so, Williamson returned for the veneers, which only took about an hour to place and involved
no pain at all.

“At the age of 50, my dental work was completed. The veneers are gorgeous and perfectly shaped for
my mouth. They are nice normal-looking teeth and are great,” Williamson said. “Dr. Steve and his staff
are like family. The experience was great, and I wish I had done it sooner. It was hard for me to
imagine how I used to look. I have received many compliments from my family and friends. This is
such a rush!”

The Remmers Dental Group office is a classically warm and professional place to be. The doctors
and staff take time to really listen to what the patients want and treat them as guests. For patients who
are timid or fearful, the Remmers Dental Group offers sedation. Like Williamson, many people who
have chipped, stained, discolored, unevenly spaced or even slightly crooked front teeth, want a bright,
attractive smile. She chose Invisalign® braces to straighten her teeth and veneers to complete her
smile. The amazing technology of Invisalign® can straighten teeth
without the burden of the brackets and wires of braces.

Often, porcelain veneers or laminates can provide the answer for patients with a completely new-
looking smile in just a few simple appointments. Using porcelain veneers, the patients’ teeth are
covered with a thin layer of porcelain to reshape and recolor them into a beautiful, natural smile.
With the latest in dental technology, a variety of restorative services, such as tooth-colored fillings,
tooth whitening, all-porcelain crowns, dentures and dental implants, can create a picture-perfect
smile.

weight loss for eight years. What he created for himself and uses now for his patients is a diet plan that
incorporates the best and most successful features of other weight-loss plans.

Dr. Hamm’s weight-loss plan uses two medications. One medication has been in use since 1959, and
curbs the physical hunger, without any significant side effects and to this day is the strongest and most
effective weight loss medication available. The second medication is newer and deals with emotional eating,
such as eating due to stress, boredom, and cravings — especially chocolate and sweets.

Besides the medications, there are lifestyle modifications patients need to make for the best results. These
changes include establishing healthier eating habits and daily aerobic exercise.
“I tell my patients to eat like an upside down pyramid,” says Dr. Hamm. “Eat breakfast like a king with 800
calories, lunch like a prince with 400 calories and dinner like a pauper with about 50 calories. Dinner should
be composed of vegetables with negligible calories, such as green beans, broccoli, and cauliflower or a
salad consisting of lettuce, tomato, cucumber and celery with a low-calorie dressing on the side to dip it in.”

Dr. Hamm says the human body is designed to be fed early in the day when its metabolic rate is at its
maximum. People who are overweight usually skip breakfast and end the day with a large meal, at a time
when their metabolic rate is much lower, causing the food to turn to fat. Furthermore, the individual will go to
bed and the calories that are consumed with the dinner meal will not be metabolized and therefore will be
converted into fat.

“This plan gives people lots of energy and boosts metabolism. People are not starving, but feel
satisfied. There is not much that would prevent a person from doing this weight-loss plan,” says Dr. Hamm.
“My fees have not raised in 14 years. We have multiple locations, no huge upfront fee, and patients come for
appointments every four weeks.”

Dr. Hamm meets with each patient one-on-one to monitor and discuss the progress. There is no contract to
sign and Dr. Hamm has proven results. The length of treatment depends on patient goals and
commitments. Although the primary objective is to help patients reach their goal quickly and safely, the focus
of care is to maintain their weight loss permanently.
