Sarah Bowling
by Cheryl Stuck
Sarah Bowling
AGE: 33
Second grade teacher at Ruth Dunn Elementary School
WHAT SHE DOES: Second grade school teacher, Sarah
Bowling loves to play in the sand — volleyball that is. One of the
perks of her job is having the summer off, so she uses her free
time to play volleyball as often as she can. She plays “pick up”
volleyball at least three times a week and is on two sand
leagues. One is a men’s league at Baxter Jack’s, which has a
sand volleyball court at 427 Baxter Avenue, and the other is a
women’s league at Stooges Bar and Grill at 7123 Grade Lane.
When courts are available, Sarah loves to play doubles, which
is two players on each side of the net because, “I know I’m
going to touch the ball each time, once or twice,” she said.
Baxter Jack’s also hosts volleyball tournaments throughout the
summer, so Sarah competes in Women’s Open Doubles and Co-
ed Open Doubles.
But she also enjoys indoor volleyball and plays on two leagues
in the winter, at MidAmerica Volleyball Association and Ohio
Valley Volleyball Center. Sarah coaches indoor volleyball for
high school girls at Presentation Academy and another group of
twelve-year-old girls at the MidAmerica Volleyball Association.
“That’s where girls get recruited by college coaches,” she said.
“I’m teaching them the fundamentals and it’s really exciting
because after days of teaching 26 second-graders, these girls
are coming for me, and they’re so excited…it renews my love for
coaching.
“Indoors, women play competitively, but not a lot of women want
to play on a sand court,” she said. They worry about not having
solid footing. Yet she prefers the sand to the hard indoor
surface. “Landing is like diving onto a bed, not like hardwood.”
HOW SHE GOT STARTED: Sarah played on a basketball team
in high school, and although she wanted to try volleyball, her
coach discouraged her. So it wasn’t until after graduating that
she began to play sand volleyball. She immediately liked it,
traveling to beach towns for tournaments. She later earned a
full scholarship at Spalding University to play on their
volleyball team for three years.
BENEFITS: “Beach volleyball works different muscles, so it’s a
great all-around body workout. I definitely prefer the sand — the
workout, the sand, the sun, the fresh air, and it’s not as hard on
your joints.”
ADVICE: “Get out there and try it. People are intimidated by it,
but it’s so much fun and such a social atmosphere. When you
try it and you fall down, you realize it doesn’t hurt, and you’re
laughing. You pick it up so much more quickly than you think
you will.”Her Toolbox
THREE THINGS SHE USES FOR THE SPORT
Sports Bra TopNike
Purchased at Dick’s Sporting Goods
Cost about $35-$40
“I buy mix and match swimsuits. I’m a bargain shopper, because
I go through them so quickly. The sand is hard on them. It’s
difficult to find just the right sports suit, because you need
support and you need to know it’s not going to fall off.”
SunscreenBanana Boat Sport spf 30
Cost about $5.99
“People ask me why I don’t get burned, and it’s because
I’m smart and I wear sunscreen. But I still get tanned
through it.”
Ponytail Holder
Purchased at Target
Cost about $4 per package
“I like the kind that don’t have any ridges in them — kind of like
panty hose. They’re really stretchy.
I have long hair and I have to keep my hair out of my face
somehow. I always keep one on my wrist — always. At one
point, it got frayed and people thought it was some kind of
eclectic bracelet. I don’t go anywhere without them.”
