I Want Her Hair
How does she get her hair to do that?
It’s the burning question many of us ask ourselves when we see someone
with perfect hair.
Maybe we love the way it frames her face, or its imperviousness to the ever-changing
weather conditions. We find the answers — and some great tips — from these hair “do”
mavens.
NAME Jennifer White
AGE 36
RESIDENCE Highlands
OCCUPATION Case Manager

STYLIST Teresa Sink, Hair Trevilian,
1005 Trevilian Way, Louisville, 40213

A chameleon of hairstyles, Jennifer White considers Teresa Sink, stylist at Hair
Trevilian, an expert at helping her reinvent her look. For Jennifer’s hair, Sink cut in a
combination of shorter layers at the crown and longer layers at the base. “It is a very
versatile hair style which is good for someone who likes to change their hair as much as
I do.” The style, says White, gives her the leeway to wear it in a ponytail, bun, or even
braids. Cost for a cut is $37.
In between visits to the salon, White makes the health of her hair a priority. One of the
styling products she can’t live without is Defining Whip from Aveda. “It can make my hair
straight, work as a good curl holder, and it’s also good if you want the piecey look.”
After shampooing and conditioning her hair, she applies the Ogon Daily Intensive Shine
Treatment and uses the ION blow dryer on the low heat setting. “I don’t over-process
my hair with blow dryers and curling irons.”
NAME Stephanie Schrenger

OCCUPATION Communications & Marketing

STYLIST Miranda Thrasher, Reflections Hair Design Inc.,
2209 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Ind. 47150

Stephanie Schrenger is so loyal to her stylist, she treks from
Fern Creek to New Albany in Southern Indiana to have her dark brown bob maintained.
“I was very worried about the quality of my hair,” Schrenger said. “I had been to other
salons and people were thinning my hair and charging more. My quality of hair had
diminished.” Now that Schrenger has found Miranda Thrasher at Reflections Hair
Design, she hasn’t even considered going anywhere else.
“She’s affordable and does a great job,” Schrenger said. “She really has a magic
touch.”
Schrenger uses Redken shampoo and conditioners, and Garnier Fructis molding
paste. She said thanks to this and Thrasher’s precision, she can do her hair in the
morning, go to work, exercise, and socialize for hours without her hair looking different
at the end of the day. She spends about $21 to $25 before tip every eight to 10
weeks, and about 15 to 20 minutes on her hair daily at home.
NAME Charissa Acree AGE 23
RESIDENCE Crescent Hill
OCCUPATION Account representative at Peritus PR
STYLIST Kelly at Hair by Bennie and Friends, 2342 Frankfort Ave., Louisville, 40206
502.895.956
When Charissa Acree moved to Louisville last year, she struggled briefly to find the
perfect hairstylist. She finally found her mane’s home at Hair by Bennie and Friends
with Kelly.
“I’m one of those people who can’t do really trendy hairstyles,” Acree said.
“Layers and long hair look better with my round face.” Acree’s do is dark brown, past
her shoulders, with layers and long bangs. She has her hair done every four to five
months for $65 to $135. At home,
Acree spends about 30 minutes a day on upkeep. She uses Suave Professionals
Radiant Brunette shampoo and Be More hairspray. Sometimes, she places rollers in
her hair and then takes them out, leaving her hair set for the day.
“Kelly really knows how to step it up and make you look trendy without making you feel
like you destroyed your head,” Acree said. “Then you leave and feel great.”

hairstyle is very low maintenance.”
Moses spends about $20 to $25 for a cut, and an additional $45 to $85 for color.
Though she says all the stylists she’s used at JCPenney Salon are great, she settled
with Jamie Gates and Roneah Tetrick. They helped teach her how to spend about 10
minutes a day on her hair and style it more than one way.
Moses uses Paul Mitchell Quik Slip styling cream, Redken Sharp Edge wax, TIGI Bed
Head Masterpiece Massive Shine hairspray, Big Sexy Hair shampoo, and Joico Leave-
In conditioner.
“Even though I use a lot of my products, I still consider my hair easy to maintain and

NAME Rande Swann
AGE 55
RESIDENCE Prospect
OCCUPATION Chief communications officer of Fund for the Arts
STYLIST Jessica, Joseph’s Salon and Spa,
3938 Dutchmans Ln., Louisville, 40207

Rande Swann jokes that her naturally silver and gray hair is “colored by God.” Swann,
said she stopped fighting the natural aging process decades ago when she started
going prematurely gray. “They tried to weave gray into a lighter highlight,” Swann said.
“Then the hair dressers just said they couldn’t weave it anymore. I decided I had no
time for full color, and I would let it go natural and live with it the way it is.” At Joseph’s
Salon and Spa, Swann has a variety of quick, easy, and natural hairstyles done by
Jessica. Swann has her hair done for about $65 every six weeks, and uses Garnier
Nutrisse products at home.
“At home, I like to spend as little time as humanly possible on my hair,”
Swann said. “I basically towel-dry it, flip it upside down, blow dry it, flip it back over, and
put a light mist of spray on it.”
NAME Catherine McGlown
AGE 28
RESIDENCE Old Louisville
OCCUPATION Corporate communications
STYLIST None.
Old Louisville resident Catherine McGlown prides herself on doing her own hair and still
making it look professional.
“I only go to a salon occasionally for a trim,” McGlown said.
McGlown uses natural oils, such as olive oil, to moisturize her mane before shampooing
and conditioning it with Elasta QP Creme Conditioning shampoo, and DPR-11
conditioner. She then lets it air dry or brushes while it is still wet to elongate the curls.
She describes her hair as “intriguing” and that it “has a mind of its own.” McGlown
spends about an hour each day on her hair, mostly at bedtime. She brushes and twists
it into large sections while applying Mango Butter to it.
McGlown said she doesn’t regret giving up salons and that her husband also loves her
‘do.’

Carole has been a faithful client.
“He really considers the shape of your head, the way your hair falls, if you have a

NAME Abby Shepherd AGE 24
RESIDENCE Hikes Point
OCCUPATION Assistant teacher, high school special needs
STYLIST Marie Whitley,
Fifth Avenue Salon,
309 Whittington Pkwy.,
Louisville, 40222
502.425.0000With her natural red hair, Abby Shepherd has unique hair before her
stylist even starts snipping.
Shepherd, jokes that her stylist at Fifth Avenue Salon, Marie Whitley, tends to use her
as a “guinea pig.” The assistant teacher’s hair is also naturally curly, and sometimes
Whitley straightens it and tries out other styles.
“I’m a little more flexible with my hairstyle than many people,” Shepherd said.
The price ranges from $30 to $45 for a shampoo, style, and cut, which Shepherd uses
about every two months.
Currently, her hair is pinned up with wild curls hanging down — like Sweeney Todd’s on
film. She washes her hair every other day, to avoid drying it out, with Curls Rock
shampoo and conditioner. When Shepherd has to combat frizz, she reaches for TIGI
Bedhead Control Freak Serum, and never blow dries her hair. Each day, she spends
only about 10 minutes on her style.
NAME Angelia Reedus
AGE 40

OCCUPATION Managing director of eWomenNetwork’s Louisville office
STYLIST Leslie Lacey, Flora’s Total Change, 3811 E. Indian Trail, Louisville, 40213

When Angelia Reedus’ long-time stylist moved to Tampa, the St.Matthews resident
spent some time figuring out where to go with her unique hair needs.
Reedus prefers a relaxed, natural, and soft hairstyle. She was able to get that
recreated when she met Leslie Lacey, a hairstylist at Flora’s Total Change near
Preston Highway and Poplar Level Road.
“I like soft hair that is straight with bangs,” Reedus said. “I tend to keep it clean without
using a lot of gels.”
Lacey has relaxed and also washed and set Reedus’ hair. The prices for her wash and
set are about $45, while a relaxer is around $80.
Reedus twists her do into a banana clip at night and then sleeps on a satin or silk
pillowcase. Every morning, she unclasps her hair and shakes it out with her fingers.
“It’s really not a lot of work,” Reedus said. “I used to wear it short, but it was just a lot
more work.”

Elegance every two to three months for cuts, styles, and sometimes colors, highlights,
and lowlights. It usually takes about two-and-a-half hours and $120 for French to style
Western's hair.
“I love the color she puts on,” Western said. “It’s also easy to keep up, and with three
kids that is a big thing for me.” Western sometimes curls her hair, and has it right above
her shoulders.
“I love what Melanie does,” she said. “It makes it so easy to spend 20 minutes or less
on my hair. Sometimes I just put it into a ponytail.”
