home style - Bathroom
Sheated floor, steam shower, body sprays, sauna style marble bench,
chromatherapy lights, and favorite tunes from your iPod. Imagine washing
away the stress of a long day this way.

This is the type of luxury provided by a performance shower. Ken
Fromme at Miller’s Fancy Bath and Kitchen on Lexington Road says this
is the new trend. People who go to spas and stay in luxury hotels when
they travel want to recreate that experience at home. This type of
bathroom allows them to do that. “A luxury bathroom is a retreat,” says
Ken. An ultra luxurious bathroom “becomes a suite where you can close
yourself off.” Some of Miller’s designs feature a dressing area and a
kitchenette with coffee maker and fridge. Most of these bathrooms have a
soak tub. Toilet and sinks are not usually a priority, as far as design
goes, in luxury bathrooms. Showers are the focal point and the priority.
Kevin and Antoinette Cogan, owners of Jefferson Development, went for
one of these ultra luxurious bathroom retreats for their newly built
condominium. Their performance shower complete with sauna style
bench, was done with top of the line Calcutta marble and frameless glass
doors. The performance shower features a steam shower, overhead rain
shower, body sprays, and heated floor. Honduran mahogany was used to
build the lingerie chest, which separates the two sinks and counter tops.
The look of this high-end piece was completed with gold leafing and
Swarovsky crystal knobs. The bathroom also has a soak tub and fog free
mirrors.
Ken says that a similar bathroom can be gotten on a smaller budget by
focusing on design and not the high priced items. “If it’s well designed and
well thought out, that’s the least expensive thing that can make the
bathroom luxurious.” Using cheaper marble, porcelain stone or ceramic
tile for the shower can cut the cost in half. White or neutral colored
fixtures can be gotten at a much more affordable cost. That luxurious
lingerie chest can be recreated using maple instead of mahogany. An
even more practical idea is to get a basic chest and dress it up with
Swarovsky crystal knobs. A small flat screen television, nice pieces of art
work, and family photographs are less expensive items that complete a
bathroom sanctuary. “Anything that makes you feel relaxed and
comfortable. Those are the things that really make a bathroom luxurious,”
says Ken.Luxury on a BudgetIf a performance shower is not your thing or
